Driving Circular Economy in Procurement for Local Governments: Key Procurement Innovation Updates from LGP

At Local Government Procurement (LGP), we are steadfast in our commitment to helping councils embrace sustainability through innovative procurement practices. This month, we are excited to share two significant advancements: the release of our 2024 Discussion Paper on Circular Economy in Procurement and the launch of Circular Economy Filter Tags in LGP’s contract panels.

First-Circular Economy in Procurement: 2024 Discussion Paper on Key Actions for Councils

Building on the success of our 2024 White Paper, our latest Discussion Paper provides actionable strategies to help councils address key barriers in implementing Circular Economy principles. These include capacity building, securing executive buy-in, managing costs, and overcoming supply chain challenges.

Featuring insights from over 100 representatives from NSW councils, the paper reflects updated challenges and trends in Circular Economy adoption in procurement for 2024. It introduces Four Key Actions to empower councils in embedding Circular Economy practices into procurement processes, ensuring they achieve both sustainability and ESG goals.

Second-Introducing Circular Economy Filter Tags

In response to feedback from councils regarding challenges in identifying sustainable suppliers, LGP is proud to introduce Circular Economy Filter Tags to our contract panels. These tags are based on established Circular Economy frameworks like the 9R strategies (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, Recycle, and Recover) and make it easier to locate suppliers that align with sustainability goals.

Using targeted questions during a Request for Information process, we assessed suppliers on key Circular Economy practices, such as:

· Incorporating recyclable materials.

· Reducing natural resource consumption in manufacturing or packaging.

· Offering repair, leasing, or product-as-a-service options.

· Accepting product returns or providing second-hand solutions.

With over 300 suppliers now carrying Circular Economy filter badges, councils can easily identify and engage with suppliers committed to CE principles when issuing RFQs. This innovation not only supports councils in achieving their sustainability goals but also drives wider adoption of Circular Economy practices across the supply chain.

Your participation and feedback are crucial for the success of this initiative. By leveraging Circular Economy filter tags and encouraging suppliers to innovate, we can create a ripple effect, benefiting communities and the environment.

Let’s Make Sustainable Procurement the New Standard

Together, these initiatives represent a significant step forward in embedding circular economy principles into council procurement practices. With your continued support, we can achieve greater sustainability, foster innovation, and build stronger local economies.
