From 1 March 2025, Local Government Procurement (LGP) has formally implemented the Contractor Code of Conduct, establishing a clear and consistent framework for ethical, safe, and socially responsible contractor practices.
The Code applies to all LGP Approved Contractors and is designed to align with the expectations of NSW councils and the communities they serve.

What the Code Covers
The Contractor Code of Conduct sets expectations across six key areas:
-
Health and Safety: Ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for all workers, including the right to refuse unsafe work.
-
Legal Compliance: Complying with all applicable laws, with the Code taking precedence where it sets a higher standard.
-
Human and Labour Rights: Zero tolerance for modern slavery, discrimination, or unfair labour practices.
-
Environmental Responsibility: Reducing environmental impact and supporting circular economy principles.
-
Social Value: Encouraging the use of local and diverse suppliers, including Indigenous and social enterprises.
-
Ethics and Integrity: Promoting fairness through standards on conflicts of interest, gifts, anti-bribery, data protection, and fair competition.
Annual Acknowledgement and Governance
All LGP Approved Contractors are required to acknowledge the Contractor Code of Conduct annually, reinforcing LGP’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance.
What This Means for Councils and Contractors
For councils, the Code provides confidence that contractors engaged through LGP are committed to ethical and responsible conduct. For contractors, it sets out clear expectations and fosters stronger, trust-based relationships with local government.
LGP is committed to supporting contractors in understanding and adopting the Code. Contractors are encouraged to review the full document and contact LGP with any questions or for further guidance.
