Supporting Councils to Adopt AI with Confidence
LGP is taking proactive steps to ensure artificial intelligence (AI) is adopted responsibly, securely and transparently, in a way that supports councils and the communities they serve.
AI has the potential to improve productivity, streamline operations and strengthen decision-making across the local government sector. For councils, however, the value of AI depends on more than the technology itself. It requires clear governance, strong safeguards and practical risk management so new tools can be used with confidence, accountability and trust.
To support this, LGP is undertaking an AI Governance Assessment to understand how AI is currently being used and to establish strong foundations for responsible adoption. The assessment is reviewing readiness across governance, people, processes, technology, data and security, while identifying opportunities to use AI safely and effectively in ways that deliver value for councils and members.
A key outcome of this work is LGP’s approach to assessing AI-related risks, informed by the NSW Government AI Assessment Framework risk management approach. This will support the identification, documentation and mitigation of AI-specific risks across the AI lifecycle, helping ensure each use case is reviewed against appropriate controls, accountability requirements and assurance pathways before broader adoption. It will also help LGP consider AI opportunities consistently, with the right level of oversight and assurance.
Through engagement with stakeholders across the business, LGP is building a practical roadmap for responsible AI adoption that reflects public sector expectations and the needs of the local government sector.
Responsible Innovation Councils Can Trust
AI governance is not about slowing innovation. It is about creating the confidence to explore new technologies responsibly, with safeguards that protect trust, transparency and public value.
By strengthening its AI governance foundations now, LGP is positioning itself to support councils, suppliers, members and stakeholders as AI continues to evolve. This work will help ensure emerging technologies are adopted in a way that is practical, accountable and aligned with the expectations of the local government sector, while continuing to deliver value for councils and the communities they serve.
