How to Gain The Best Protection from Cyber Threats

Cyber-attacks aim to steal your data and destroy it on your systems, with public and large scale attacks well reported. For councils, and anyone with a lot of data, it takes a long time to recover. If a hacker is in your system, he can destroy 52 TB of your critical data an hour – often on a Saturday night.

Veeam in their survey of CISOs found: 96% of ransomware attacks targeted backups,16% were able to recover without paying a ransom, 29% of those who paid still couldn’t get their data back. (Source: Veeam ransomware trends 2024).  Destructive Attacks, where there are no ransom option, are more common than ransomware now. Data in public clouds are now the most vulnerable but it is at risk everywhere (Source: IBM Data Breach Report 2024).

Attackers attempt to destroy your backups first. The loss of payroll, financial, and customer data will have an immediate and disastrous impact on business, reputation, and staff morale. Audit and Risk Committees are now acutely aware of the risks of Cyber-attack. All we have had up till now are backups. But what should you do if you lose your data and your backups?

IBM have been working towards a solution for many years now, which they have pioneered in banks, that is now in their Flash Systems storage range. The IBM storage  an make immutable snapshots of your data, on your main storage, which are regularly scheduled, using minimal capacity, and creating effectively Safe Guarded Copies of your data that cannot be encrypted or removed. In the event of a cyber-attack, you can work with your security provider to remove the attacker’s access and then launch your systems immediately from the safe copies. No weeks of copying from tape backups and no disruption.

IBM storage can now identify sudden changes in your data and alert you and your security provider. Their vendor monitoring tool can immediately start a new set of Safe Copies so that data is not lost.  In addition, this helps with security audits and cyber-insurance requirements. We have clients who have achieved audited, ASD Essential 8, level 3 for data protection, by using this technology.

Aerocom Technology are IBM providers on the LGP115-2 contract and have worked with LGP and councils for many years. We are a qualified, experienced IBM Partner, providing systems and security to councils and education. This technolody is currently being installed in councils across the state. We can assist with the IBM storage design and setup, to make your systems easy to re-start when you need them to.
